In this sequence from 'my name is Joe' the lighting is all natural this is very impactful as it adds to the verisimilitude of the scene. The scene is quite bleak and bland colour wise this suggests the narrative could follow a similar idea of quite a tragic story with little explanation. furthermore, the narrative is hinted through the discussion of football and a football club this adds to the realism of the scene and the lighting due to it being natural reinforces this idea of it being a relatable film. The genre of this film is also conveyed through the lighting, we hear discussions of football as well as seeing football boots suggesting it to be a sports film but not a stereotypical big sports film but a much more simplistic wholesome sports film. The film also appears to be a romance which is hinted at through the dialogue and shot types of the man and the woman the lighting is also brighter in this section of the scene suggesting the filmmaker wanting to put extra emphasis on this moment. The film could also be classified as a coming of age due to the young men we see throughout the sequence. In terms of mise en scene, the setting seems quite simply we are in a lower end urban area the bus the boys are are in is rusted and worn down as well as being a dull shade of grey. this all adds to the realism of the scene helped along by the natural lighting which makes us as the audience see everything in the light as if we were there.

This film is shot in black and white which immediately creates a macabre atmosphere. Lots of the lighting appears low key with the initial shot of the boat coming into view being barely visible in the thick fog present. This adds to this ominous and eerie atmosphere present throughout the scene. The mise en scene also has an impact as multiple times in this scene we see the use of what looks like crows flying above the heads of the two men. Crows historically have been the representation of death and this along with the low-key lighting help to build up a creepy and scary atmosphere. Furthermore, the characters we see are dressed in what appears to be naval or sea men's attire, the lighting makes these clothes seem dark and quite harsh on the lighter backgrounds towards the end of the scene making the characters seem potentially mysterious and perplexing. Moreover, it hints towards a darker narrative-focused around the lighthouse and the rock they are stranded on. In one of the shots is an establishing shot of the lighthouse as well as the quarters next to it the lighting in this scene appears more high key especially with the lighthouse beam in the top right illuminating the characters walking below it. his hints towards the genre being somewhat mystery, as well as thriller which is further supported with the birds.
