How are props used in this scene to create tension and foreshadow narrative?

Props are used very well in this scene to create tension. The taxidermy birds and owl build tension as they put Marion in an uncomfortable position as she talks to Norman. At the same time it helps to establish Norman as an interesting man who has a, what some might call weird hobby. Furthermore it helps to foreshadow the narrative as Norman ends up killing the woman. The bird that sits behind Norman helps to foreshadow her becoming his 'prey'. The scene puts a lot of emphasis on the birds and how they are locked in there stuffed positions forever. This further foreshadows the narrative as when the woman is killed she will to be stuck in her death forever.

How is the B and W look and lighting used within the scene?

The black and white look and lighting is used to great effect in this scene it makes everything seem very equal as it is all one of two colours. However it also serves as a method of drawing the audiences eye. The important elements of the scene are in white such as the character's faces this makes sure the audience's stays focused on them instead of whats going on in the background. The black and white contrast each other to ensure full audience immersion and engagement.

Example of a prop which isn't obviously significant to the narrative.

One example of a prop which isn't obviously significant to the narrative is the lighter in the opening sequence of Shutter Island.
